Hundreds of children and teens showed they had the stuff to be lifesavers during competitions Friday, July 21, on the sand and in the water at Newport Beach.
And on Saturday, professional lifeguards will be taking to the shore to compete.
For the first time in more than a decade, the California Surf Lifesaving Association’s regional championships are being held in Newport Beach.
The first day of competition on Friday was reserved for Junior Lifeguards, ages 10 to 19, who ran, swam, paddled and otherwise showed off the skills they have learned for saving lives at the beach and in the water.
On Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. and going well into the afternoon, more than 150 lifeguards will be competing in a variety of events staged at the Point, the stretch of Newport Beach between the pier and 17th Street. Competitors come from agencies as far away as Santa Cruz and San Diego.
