Coronavirus: Orange County cumulative death total passes 3,000 on Jan. 30

Forty-three new deaths were reported by the county on Saturday, raising the total number of COVID fatalities to 3,018. More than one-third of the reported deaths, 1,143, have been in January.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Jan. 22.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 1,279 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Jan. 30, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 231,036 cases since tracking began.

The county also reported 1,442 patients in local hospitals, which is 79 fewer than the previous report. There are 394 patients listed in intensive care units on Saturday, 32 fewer than in Friday’s report. The hospital patient totals are about the same level as where they were the middle of December.

An estimated 20,223 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 2,665,629 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 22,215 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 3,018 deaths reported from the virus, 827 were skilled nursing facility residents, 323 were in assisted living facilities, one was an O.C. jail inmate and five were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 34% (1,026, up 11)
  • 75-84: 23.33% (704, up 15)
  • 65-74: 19.29% (583, up 10)
  • 55-64: 13.34% (401, up 4)
  • 45-54: 6.59% (199, up 1)
  • 35-44: 2.15% (65, up 2)
  • 25-34: 1.09% (33)
  • 18-24: 0.2% (6)
  • 17 and younger: 0.03% (1)

It is estimated 173,862 people have recovered from the virus as of Saturday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
