Firefighters rescued a construction worker who fell off a ladder and landed about 22 feet down a hole a fire official described as an underground vault at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia on Thursday, Sept. 15.
The man suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, according to Chen Suen, deputy fire chief for the Arcadia Fire Department. He didn’t know if the man was still hospitalized as of Friday.
The man was a contractor working on a water reclamation project on the west end of the grandstand, said Mike Willman, director of publicity for Santa Anita Park. The project started this summer and is scheduled to be completed Sept. 26, he added.
He assumed the concrete hole is a way to access underground tanks.
Firefighters went to Santa Anita Park at 285 W. Huntington Drive on a rescue call at 2:35 p.m.

The man fell into what Suen described as a concrete vault. There were other workers at the scene.
“The reports we had was he was yelling from the bottom,” Suen said, adding that is how people were alerted to what happened.
Firefighters used a ladder to reach the man and treated him, the deputy fire chief said. They also set up a tripod system which they moved over the hole. They put a harness on the man and pulled him out, Suen said.
