Woman fatally struck by train in Riverside, possibly after fight

A woman was killed — possibly after an altercation with another homeless person — when she was struck by a train in Riverside on Monday morning, April 11, the Riverside Police Department said.

The investigation into the 6:35 a.m. collision near Indiana Avenue and Madison Street prompted authorities to shut down rail traffic, including Metrolink’s 91/Perris Valley and Inland Empire-Orange County lines, said Scott Johnson, a Metrolink spokesman. Rail traffic was expected to be interrupted until about 10 a.m.

A witness told police that a man and a woman were fighting before the woman was struck, said Officer Ryan Railsback, a Police Department spokesman. That man has been detained, Railsback said, and police are trying to determine whether a crime occurred.

The woman was hit by a BNSF freight train, Johnson said.

Metrolink is updating the status of its trains on its Twitter feeds, @MetrolinkIEOC and @metrolink91.
