Westminster police shoot man they say pointed a rifle at them

A 29-year-old rifle-wielding man clad only in his underwear and yelling the “devil was trying to kill him” was shot by Westminster police at a motel after the man pointed the weapon at officers Friday night, Dec. 8, authorities said.

The man, identified only as a Huntington Beach resident, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange and underwent surgery Friday night, but an update on his condition was not available Saturday morning.

Officers were called to Westminster Boulevard and Willow Lane, near a Motel 6 and In-N-Out, just before 4:25 p.m. to check on a man sitting on top of a car and acting erratically, Cmdr. Kevin MacCormick said. When they arrived, they found the man holding the rifle on the car.

The area is just east of the 405 Freeway.

Guests in the nearby motel rooms were asked to remain inside and away from windows and doors, MacCormick said.

Officers talked with the man, but he pointed the rifle at them and at least one officer fired at him, MacCormick said. The man fell off the car and started walking toward officers, but collapsed.

Police attempted medical aid before paramedics arrived and took the man to a hospital, the commander said.

Westminster police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office were conducting separate investigations into the police shooting.
