Two Northern California campers go missing, and teen is found dead

After two people went missing on a camping trip near Lake Oroville, one of them — a 14-year-old boy — has been found dead, the Butte County sheriff’s office said.

The teen’s father reported on Wednesday that he hadn’t seen his son or their friend after becoming separated from them in the Bald Rock area, near Berry Creek. That evening, a search team from the sheriff’s office found the boy’s body at the bottom of a steep, rocky embankment.

Still missing is the other member of the party, Christopher Stephenson, 57, of Marysville.

A sheriff’s spokesman told TV station KOVR that foul play is not suspected.

Because of wildfire damage, many roads and trails in that part of Plumas National Forest are in poor condition. A Forest Service order in effect until March 2023 bars the public from much of the area.

Anyone with information on Stephenson’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Butte County sheriff’s office, (530) 538-7322.
