Space Shuttle Endeavour drew final admirers at California Science Center

The public got a last chance on Sunday, Dec 31 to see the historic Space Shuttle Endeavour on display at the California Science Center, and the spacecraft is not to be seen again for several years.

Endeavour is being moved to the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center in Exposition Park where it will be positioned in its new future home. And its new home will literally be built around the huge shuttle display, which is called a full shuttle stack.

According to the California Science Center, Endeavour “will be moved off display and positioned in the Air and Space Center, which will then be completed around the full shuttle stack.”

Endeavour was a famed part of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. The orbiter and its crew embarked on their first mission to space in May 1992. Its 25th and last mission was in May 2011. It was the fifth and final Space Shuttle built.

The Air and Space Center being built in Exposition Park will be the only place on Earth where the public can see a complete Space Shuttle system — including an orbiter that flew in space.
