San Juan Capistrano awards design contract for $3.5 million skatepark

San Juan Capistrano leaders have awarded a contract for designing the city’s first skatepark.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved the $128,000 contract, which includes a 10% contingency, on Tuesday, Jan. 19, picking Grindline Skateparks.

The skatepark, expected to cost about $3.5 million, is slotted for empty space near the Ecology Center, Community Center and sports fields.

The hope is to have the park done by the end of 2021, with free entry, according to the San Juan Capistrano Skate Park Coalition, which has worked alongside city leaders to get feedback from the skate community.

Grindline Skateparks was chosen from a group of three bidders for the design work.

The proposed skate park would be 28,300 square feet, with 21,700 square feet of skating area. The plan calls for a mix of features, including a street plaza with rails and curbs, bowls, pools and transitions and stairs.

There could also be skateable art installations added to the project.

The plans are for an “all wheels park” that is also for scooters and BMX riders and that it will have spaces for beginners and those who are advanced.

Most of the funding for the new park, about $3.1 million, would come from the city’s park and recreation fund, plus $187,756 from its Community Facilities District bond funds, and $200,418 from Proposition 68 statewide park project grant funds.

The city of Dana Point has agreed to fund annual maintenance costs for the park, which is near the border between the cities and is envisioned to serve residents of both communities.
