The Radford fire, burning near Barton Flats and Snow Summit in the Big Bear area, saw minimal growth overnight, having now burned 990 acres with 2% containment, authorities said on Wednesday morning, Sept. 7.
More than 470 fire personnel continued to work the fire, receiving help from air resources in hot and dry conditions, U.S. National Forest officials said in an 8 a.m. update. Tuesday evening, the estimated amount of scorched acres was 917.
On Tuesday, at least 16 air tankers were dropping water and fire retardant. Overnight footage showes flames chewing through brush and tall trees, some of which had toppled over.
Highway 38 remained closed, from Valley of the Falls Drive to Lake Williams Drive, except for residents of the mountain communities, who were allowed through with proof of residency, officials said.

Evacuations remained in place for the Moonridge neighborhood, from Summit Boulevard to Club View Drive and Evergreen Drive to the north, officials said. An evacuation warning was in place for areas east of Club View Drive to Angeles Camp Road and Highway 18 to the north to areas between Deer Canyon and Sand Canyon Road to the south.
Evacuation orders were also issued for the area bordered by Pineknot Trail, Skyline Trail, Castlerock Trail and Knickerbocker Road, officials said. Another order was in place from Glass Road to South Fork River Road.
Deputies tried to contact every resident in the evacuated areas. They went to 1,394 homes to notify residents of the evacuation orders. Of those homes, residents in 240 of them evacuated, while residents in 54 choose to remain, said Mara Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. At the rest, there was no answer.
The American Red Cross has a shelter open at Big Bear High School, 351 Maple Lane, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department. Those in need of assistance with animal evacuations can call San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control at 800-472-5609.
The fire broke out about 1:30 p.m., Monday, officials said. The fire’s cause was under investigation.
