Unrath died along with seven others on Nov. 29 when a CV-22B Osprey helicopter went down during a training exercise off the coast of Japan. He was assigned to the 21st Special Operations Squadron, 353rd Special Operations Wing, Yokota Air Base, Japan.

Unrath is a triplet — a son of Gregg and Nora Unrath of Riverside. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Elementary School, Amelia Earhart Middle School and King High, his parents said.

He received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Cal Poly Pomona and graduated from Pomona with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering in 2013, according to an Air Force news release.
