Grace Coleman, the woman charged with driving under the influence and killing a couple in a Newport Beach crash that also injured their three daughters, remained behind bars on Tuesday, Dec. 22, after the court denied a request for bail from her lawyer.
The 22-year-old Newport Beach woman’s lawyer tried Tuesday to have her released to a residential treatment facility but that request was denied, said Orange County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Kimberly Edds.
Prosecutors on Tuesday said Coleman was driven home the night of the crash, Dec. 8, from a brewery and then got into her car.
At around 7:45 p.m. Coleman, in a Range Rover, hit the Nissan Versa carrying Henry Saldana-Mejia, 27, and his wife, Gabriela Andrade, 28, and their three young daughters, prosecutors say. The couple died, and the three girls were hospitalized.
Coleman is facing five felony counts related to the crash; two counts of second-degree murder, two DUI-related counts, and hit-and-run, court records show.
After she was arrested in the deadly crash, authorities also charged her for an earlier DUI-related arrest in Laguna Beach on Aug. 29. According to the criminal complaint, in that earlier incident Coleman was driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent.
Coleman is set to next appear in court on Jan. 27.
