Man walking in Irvine street killed in hit-and-run

A 33-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while walking in an Irvine street Thursday night, Nov. 4, and police are searching for a light-colored sedan and its driver, authorities said.

The collision occurred near Von Karman Avenue and Dupont Drive just past 9:05 p.m., Irvine Sgt. Karie Davies said.

Irvine police initially received a call of a man walking southbound in traffic lanes on Von Karman Avenue near Michelson Drive, Davies said. Minutes later, another call came in regarding the crash.

Police are searching for the car, possibly with front-end damage, which continued southbound on Von Karman  following the collision, Davies said.

Detectives were in the area Friday to see if any surveillance cameras may have captured the crash, she said.

The man’s identity was withheld by police pending notification of his relatives.

Von Karman Avenue is a four-lane street with solid and broken yellow lines creating a median area for left-hand turns. It wasn’t known where, specifically, the pedestrian was when he was struck, or why he was in the street and not on a sidewalk.
