Man dies, woman hospitalized after rollover crash in San Clemente

A 63-year-old man died and a woman was hospitalized following a single-vehicle rollover crash near a shopping center in San Clemente Saturday morning, Aug. 20, authorities said.

The two were traveling in a Maserati westbound along Camino De Los Mares just north of the 5 Freeway near the Ocean View Plaza shopping center when the crash occurred just after 9:40 a.m., Orange County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Renee De La Rosa said.

The vehicle also hit a tree before coming to rest in the right westbound lane, Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Hylton said.

The man was driving and investigators believe he suffered a medical emergency that led to the crash, Hylton said. The 22-year-old woman, a passenger, was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol, drugs and speed were not believed to have caused the crash, Hylton said.

Officials shut down Camino De Los Mares between Camino El Molino and Calle Agua while investigators worked the scene.
