Irvine police arrest barricaded suspect after 7-hour-plus standoff that closed surrounding streets

IRVINE — A suspect who was barricaded for several hours in an apartment in Irvine is in police custody Thursday.

The suspect, who police say was involved in an earlier domestic incident and was believed to be armed and dangerous, was arrested by Irvine Police Department officers about 2:30 a.m., ending the seven-hour plus standoff.

According to Irvine police, the suspect engaged in a standoff with officers on the 1000 block of Elements Way beginning about 7 p.m. Wednesday. Police used a diversionary device before arresting the suspect.

Residents in the immediate area where evacuated for several hours, and surrounding streets were closed until morning.
