Candidate filing extended in several local council, school board races

Still interested in running for local office? You just might be in luck.

The filing period has been extended for a bevy of local races — from school boards to water districts to city councils — until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

These short extensions kick in for races where eligible incumbents did not file for re-election (if an incumbent is termed out, there is no extension).  The filing period for other races closed Friday, Aug. 12.

“This is a great opportunity for someone who was initially hesitant to run against an incumbent to put their hat in the ring,” Orange County Registrar of Voters Bob Page said. His office handles school and special district races, but city clerks administer their local council races.

Candidates wishing to file by the new deadline for a school or special district race can seek assistance from the Registrar of Voters at 714-567-7600 (ask for the “Candidate and Voters Services” division), or online at ocvote.gov/candidates. Candidacy documents are available at the office at 1300 S. Grand Ave., Building C in Santa Ana.

To file for a city council race that has been extended, contact that city’s clerk or check the city’s website for information on how to submitted the necessary paperwork.
