As autumn arrives, so does another heat wave in Southern California

With Thursday, Sept. 22, marking the first day of autumn, the only chill in the air many Southern Californians will be feeling for the next week will be coming from their air conditioning as another heat wave prepares to grip the region.

The spike in temperatures comes after a fall-like week featuring cool and breezy weather throughout the area, with temperatures hanging around the high 70s and low 80s.

But starting Thursday, a gradual temperature increase through the weekend will bring thermometers to the 90s and low 100s for many inland areas of Southern California by next week, according to the National Weather Service.

In Riverside, the high Thursday is expected to be 90 degrees and will continue to climb daily to about 101 degrees by Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26 and 27, said Mark Moede, meteorologist with the NWS. An almost identical trend is projected in San Bernardino, with highs expected to top out at 102 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, Moede said.

Tuesday will feature some of the highest expected temperatures across Orange County, with Anaheim likely to feel a two-degree increase from Monday and top out at 97, according to the NWS. Fullerton is expected to reach 98 degrees Tuesday, a degree higher than its projected Monday high, the NWS said.

Much of inland Los Angeles County is expected to range between 90 and 100 degrees throughout the height of the heat wave, said Kristin Stewart, meteorologist for the NWS. Burbank was projected to sizzle at 101 degrees on both Monday and Tuesday, the NWS said.

But this heat wave is not expected to be as intense as the previous one that broiled the region for more than a week in late August and early September, Moede said. This temperature spike will lack the abnormal humidity that was fueled by Tropical Storm Kay and other monsoonal patterns, Moede said.

“This is a different kind of heat wave,” Moede said. “We’re in the tail end of monsoon season now.”

Stewart was not anticipating any daily high temperature records being broken during this heat wave, as many of the current records were around 105 degrees and higher, she said.

A slight drop in temperature is expected Wednesday, Sept. 28, but it remains unclear if cooler temperatures will make a quick return, according to Moede and Stewart.

“It’s too far off to know if the heat will continue or not (in the coming weeks),” Moede said.
