Acquaintance of man shot and killed in Orange arrested on suspicion of homicide

Police arrested a man Sunday afternoon on suspicion of killing an acquaintance who was shot outside of an apartment complex in Orange earlier in the day.

Detectives took Andrew Ruelas, 21, of Santa Ana into custody at 4 p.m. in connection with the death of 39-year-old Anaheim Resident Michael Tovar, Orange Police Sgt. Phil McMullin said. The victim was found with a single gunshot wound and lying on a sidewalk on the 2000 block of East Fairway Drive shortly after midnight.

The two men knew each other prior to the shooting, and one of them was visiting a shared acquaintance at a nearby apartment the night it happened, McMullin said. An altercation developed when the other showed up that evening, and resulted in gunfire.

Investigators worked to identify and track down Ruelas, McMullin said. He was arrested in Huntington Beach, and was in custody as of Monday evening. No other suspects were sought.

Further information about the shooting was not immediately released.
