Woman shot to death in Bellflower, ex-husband injured in possible suicide attempt

BELLFLOWER — A woman was shot to death and her ex-husband — who authorities consider a suspect — was wounded Monday in a shooting in Bellflower and sheriff’s detectives were trying to determine what happened, a deputy said.
The twin shootings took place around 3:15 p.m. in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue, according to sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldana.
Responding deputies found a woman who was shot once in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy Charles Moore said. The woman’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
They also found a man who was also suffering from one gunshot wound to the chest, which in his case appeared to be self-inflicted. He was taken to a hospital by paramedics and his current condition was unknown.
The initial investigation revealed the two people were once married and were now divorced, Moore continued.
Detectives also learned the former husband contacted the woman at her residence and during that visit, he produced a handgun and shot her and then turned the gun on himself. It’s not clear what precipitated the shootings.
The couple had two children — a 6-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter — who were there during the shooting but were not hurt.
At this point the ex-husband has not been arrested but the investigation was continuing, Moore said.
