Where did summer suddenly go? Rain, cooler weather swoops into area

The sun was shining and it was a full-blown beautiful summer day – until the suspicious-looking gray clouds rolled in, and with them rain, putting a damper on the weather Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Tropical showers sprinkled the Orange County region by late Tuesday afternoon, spreading north to hide the sunshine and suddenly drop the temperature.

But be warned, this tropical system could also bring humid and muggy weather.

The change in weather is caused by remnants of Tropical Storm Eugene south of the Baja Peninsula, which also brought a bump in swell for surfers the past two days.

“We have a little bit of tropical moisture coming from the south, a few pockets of showers it looking like on and off for the next couple of days,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Adams, based out of San Diego, which covers Orange County. “We may be looking at a few gloomy couple days here.”

While Orange County saw the shift in weather by about 3 p.m., the Los Angeles area hadn’t quite seen the clouds roll in at that time.

“It’s still kind of moving into the area,” said NWS meteorologist Kristan Lund of the LA and South Bay area. “It’s coming.”

There’s a chance of showers for the entire area, from the coast to the mountains, from Tuesday through Thursday, including a chance of thunderstorms, she said.

Don’t worry, summer isn’t over quite yet.

“Hopefully it will be back in the next couple of days,” Lund said of the sun. “By the weekend, we’re thinking it should clear through.”
