With searing heat scorching Southern California on Friday, July 6, several cities obliterated their recorded high temperatures for this day — and some even tied or broke all-time marks, the National Weather Service said.
Among them, Santa Ana hit an all-time high of 114, wiping out the previous record of 112, set June 14, 1917. The previous record for the date was 99 in 1927.
Newport Beach also set a record high for the date: 83, beating out the previous high of 82 set in 1936.
In Woodland Hills, the high of 117 degrees easily eclipsed the record of 106 for this day set in 1976. And if it felt like the sun had never been hotter in Riverside, and your recollection doesn’t go back 93 years, you were right: The 118 degrees Friday tied July 17, 1925, for the hottest day in the history of the city, where heat records had been kept since 1893.
The heat in Woodland Hills was no match for many air conditioners there, said Brittany Holley, who schedules calls for technicians at LA Construction Heating and Air Conditioning in that area.
Business was brisk Friday, she said. Holley heard from a mix of regular customers seeking tune-ups to their systems and others hastily calling because hot air – not cold — was blowing from their vents.
“We get people panicking,” Holley said. “They’re scared. They have families, and they’re worried that their families are going to have to sit in unconditioned houses. It’s a danger.”
Holley said customers would do well to get their units serviced regularly so they don’t have to call only when the temperature soars.
“If you’re not prepared for summer, then you are stuck in a bad place,” she said.
Sue Kack thought she was in a better place Friday. She has a house near Phoenix, where it was 111 degrees Friday, and a house in Riverside.
“Ah, the irony of it all,” she said. “I came here last Saturday to escape the heat of AZ.”
Here’s a look at the other records set for July 6, along with all-time heat records that were established.
