SANTA ANA — Three suspects in a cellphone store robbery were taken into custody Thursday night after Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies aboard a helicopter electronically tracked the stolen merchandise, authorities said.
Around 8:51 p.m. two males with firearms entered an AT&T store at 1268 East 17th Street while a third male waited outside in a getaway car, Santa Ana Police Cmdr. Michael Claborn said. The robbers stole several cellphones and fled the store in the vehicle.
A short time later the deputies aboard the helicopter began following the car through a tracking device associated with the stolen phones, Claborn said. The deputies directed Sheriff’s Department personnel on the ground to the car’s location. Following a traffic stop the trio was taken into custody on Ortega Highway east of Antonio Parkway near San Juan Capistrano.
The names of the suspects were not immediately released.
