Road rage near Newport Beach pier leads to shooting; man in Tesla SUV injured

A man was shot in the shoulder near the Newport Beach pier following a road rage incident and was released from a hospital following treatment Wednesday morning, Feb. 28, authorities said.

Newport Beach police received a call of shots fired in a parking lot in the 2100 block of West Oceanfront Walk about 12:15 a.m., Sgt. Scott Oberon said. A short time later, a man driving a Tesla SUV flagged down officers in the area of San Joaquin Hills and Jamboree roads.

The man was found with a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital by paramedics, Oberon said.

The sergeant said the Tesla’s driver pulled up next to a parked dark-colored sedan with four males standing next to it following the road rage incident. They argued before one of the men pulled a gun from his waistband and fired five times at the SUV, hitting the driver once.

Further details about the road rage incident and what led to it were not yet known. Police did not have suspect information nor further information about the suspects’ car.

Video from the OnSceneTV showed investigators looking at a dark-colored Tesla SUV parked at a Shell gas station that appeared to have been struck in the rear by bullets.

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call Newport Beach police at 949-644-3681.
