To some of his former students, retired East Los Angeles College instructor Russell Errett was an intelligent, funny and intense teacher. But others described him as a weird and vulgar man, who talked about his sex life and his ex-wife in class, and flirted with female students.
Errett, who lives in Alhambra, was accused of killing his wife Thursday after her body was found in an alley just south of the five-story parking structure at 26 N. 1st St. Police said 29-year-old Hui Li fell to her death.
The comments about Errett’s time at ELAC come from RateMyProfessors.com, a website where students can anonymously review their instructors. The 54 reviews spanned from 2005 to 2014. Five were negative ratings. He received an overall quality of 4.5.
The 55-year-old Errett retired as an adjunct instructor from ELAC on Aug. 1, 2014, according to staff at the Los Angeles Community College District. The majority of the classes assigned to him were in the college’s philosophy department.
Staff said he was originally hired in 1980, then rehired in 1995. However, staff didn’t have information on what jobs he held, because online records only went back to 2005. In that year, he was listed as an adjunct instructor.
He earned $23,944 in total pay and benefits in 2013, $19,878 in 2014 and just $15 in 2015, according to Transparent California, an online database of public employee pay and benefits data.
According to RateMyProfessors, even some of the rave reviews for Errett indicated his classes were different.
“Errett’s not for the faint of heart, though,” a student said in a July 28, 2012 review. “Rough and Real. Be ready to rock!”
Another student in 2006 called Errett’s class a waste of time and money. The student claimed Errett would flirt with the girls in the class, and would often deviate from the course material with stories of sex and his life.
“Ask me how I know that he has at the least two ex-wives, three kids and custody battles,” the student wrote in the Feb. 3, 2006 review. “All he did was talk about this crap!”
Another student posted in 2007 that Errett “loves Asian girls.”

On Thursday, police said Errett was arrested after officers found “inconsistencies at the scene” of the suspected murder. Errett called police around 1 a.m. saying Li had fallen from the parking structure.
Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said paramedics pronounced Li dead at the scene at 1:30 a.m. Alhambra police said they’re investigated the woman’s death as a possible case of domestic violence.
Detectives didn’t return phone calls Friday.
Booking records show Errett is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles on $2 million bail. He will be arraigned Monday at Alhambra Superior Court.
