Northbound 405 shut down in OC after truck smashes into Bolsa Avenue bridge

A semi-truck carrying a forklift crashed into wooden supports underneath the under-construction Bolsa Avenue bridge in Westminster early Monday, Sept. 28, leading police to close the northside of the 405 Freeway for hours.

The truck smashed into falsework underneath the bridge at around 7:45 a.m., said Megan Abba, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Transportation Authority.

The crash left wooden debris scattered across several lanes and an offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers who responded reported that the wooden supports needed “immediate repairs” and that the overpass would need to be inspected to make sure it was safe, according to traffic logs.

CHP officers shut down all lanes of the north 405 at Beach Boulevard by around 8:30 a.m., with estimates that the freeway would remain closed for at least two hours.

No one was injured. It wasn’t clear if any workers were at the construction site at the time of the crash.

Many bridges are getting widened or replaced on the I-405, between the 73 and 605 freeways in a $1.9 billion project. The 405 will add lanes for that 16-mile stretch, with completion scheduled for 2023.
