Motorcyclist dies after slamming into vehicle trying to avoid jaywalking pedestrian in Stanton

Orange County sheriff’s officials asked Sunday for the public’s help identifying a pedestrian who allegedly jaywalked across a major street in Stanton, leading to the death of a motorcyclist from Cerritos, authorities said.

About 10 a.m. Sunday, July 19, the pedestrian crossed the northbound side of Beach Boulevard near Katella Avenue, causing oncoming vehicles to brake abruptly, deputies said.

As a result, the motorcyclist slammed into the back of a vehicle that swerved to avoid the pedestrian. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Mark Palacios, 51, said Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner Larry Esslinger.

The pedestrian was not found when deputies arrived at the scene, but they were searching for him because of his involvement, deputies said.

The man was described as having a thin build with black hair and scruffy facial hair. He was believed to be 30- to 35-years-old and was seen wearing a white shirt and black pants, officials said.

No other injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7000.
