Police are searching Monday morning for a man who escaped from the California Institute for Men in Chino and may be in Yorba Linda, according to initial information.
The escapee, Michael Garrett, 33, is a white man standing about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 197 pounds, according to a Facebook post on the Chino Police Department‘s page.
Residents reported hearing alarms from the prison around 2 a.m., and police searched for Garrett until around 4:30 a.m., according to the Chino police and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Chino Hills station. The departments confirmed Garrett was “no longer in the immediate vicinity. Investigative leads are being followed to apprehend the suspect.”
Garrett was in custody for grand theft auto and felony evading and initial police reports indicate he stole a prison vehicles before leading Chino police on a pursuit into Chino Hills.
Garrett eventually lost pursuing law enforcement but was tracked to Yorba Linda.
Police ask anyone who sees Garrett to call 911 immediately.
