Great Park balloon masks up to protect against COVID-19

The familiar orange balloon at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine is sporting a new look designed to remind people to practice coronavirus safety.

Earlier this week, the giant orb was adorned with sunglasses and a face covering, and it went on display Thursday, Aug. 27, taking flight with an empty gondola due to restrictions on gatherings.

The balloon’s accessories were added by FivePoint Holdings, the developer that sponsors the balloon and has donated more than 1 million masks for Irvine workers and residents.

Face coverings are required for most people in indoor public settings such as grocery stores, and outside if they can’t keep six feet away from others. Health experts say masks help limit the spread of respiratory droplets that may carry the virus.
