Coronavirus state tracker: California hospitalizations are lowest since June; 5,966 new cases and 26 new deaths as of Aug. 16

For the 11th straight day, hospitalizations across California were down. According to state health agencies, there were 18 fewer hospitalizations as of Sunday, Aug. 16. The total number of COVID-related hospitalizations is 6,309, the lowest it has been since June 30, when hospitalizations were at 6,612.

California reported 5,966 new cases of the coronavirus, on Sunday, Aug. 16, bringing the cumulative total since tracking began to 623,534.

There were also 26 new deaths reported Sunday, making for a total of 11,371 people who have died, according to unofficial counts from county websites.

Statewide, COVID-related hospitalizations also continued to decline Saturday. State health officials reported 37 fewer hospitalizations, with 6,327 people in hospitals statewide. That marks the 11th day straight that hospitalizations had declined.

As of Aug. 13, the state’s breakdown of cases by age is as follows:

5 and younger: 2.1% (12,329)5-17: 7.6% (45,817)18-34: 35.3% (212,134)35-49: 25% (150,210)50-59: 14% (84,175)60-64: 5.1% (30,458)65-69: 3.5% (20,851)70-74: 2.4% (14,526)75-79: 1.7% (10,027)80 and older: 3.3% (19,712)

The state’s breakdown of deaths by age group is as follows:

5 and younger: 0% (0)5-17: 0% (1)18-34: 1.5% (160)35-49: 5.8% (623)50-59: 10.2% (1,104)60-64: 8% (870)65-69: 9.9% (1,076)70-74: 11.4% (1,239)75-79: 11.4% (1,230)80 and older: 41.8% (4,526)
