Coronavirus: Orange County reports a record high of 304 new cases and 4 new deaths as of June 14

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported another 304 cases attributed to the coronavirus as of Sunday, June 14, bringing the total number of cases to 8,573. Four new deaths also were reported.

Of the 221 reported deaths since the start of tracking the virus in the county, 102 have been among skilled nursing facility residents.

The county noted another 304 new positive tests in the last day, raising the total in the county to 8,573 since the start of testing in March. The average number of new cases for the past seven days is 172 a day.

Of the 8,573 confirmed cases, 887 were residents in skilled nursing facilities and 386 were Orange County Jail inmates.

The county has also started releasing an estimate for the number of recoveries from the virus, which was about 4,091 as of Sunday’s update.

The California Department of Health reports that there were 290 hospitalized patients (suspected and positive) in 33 hospitals across the county as of June 14, with 40% of the county’s stock of ICU beds available.

The OCHCA data for Sunday’s report had 290 hospitalizations and 144 people in ICUs. The Orange County data represents the 26 hospitals with emergency receiving centers and licensed ICU beds.

Friday’s total tests conducted rose to 181,567. The seven-day average trend for daily tests is 2,773, down from 3,136 in Friday’s report.

The California Department of Health reported that the positive test rate for Orange County has been 4% in the last 14 days out of 56,787 tests.

The case rate for Orange County is about 26.6 cases per 10,000 residents, including deaths and recoveries.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85+: 30% (66)
  • 75-84: 25% (57)
  • 65-74: 19% (42)
  • 55-64: 13% (29)
  • 45-54: 8% (17)
  • 35-44: 3% (7)
  • 25-34: 1% (3)
  • 18-24: 0%
  • 0-17: 0%

About 75% of the deaths in the county are people 65 and older.
