Coronavirus: Orange County reports 558 new cases and 2 new deaths as of Aug. 2

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 558 new cases of the coronavirus as of Sunday, August 2.

The cumulative total number of positive cases for Orange County is at least 37,391 since local testing began in March.

It is estimated that more than half of the cases, or 24,259 as of Sunday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

There were 2 new deaths reported in Orange County on Sunday, bringing the total number of residents who have died to 651.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigation and can take weeks to process, officials say.

Of the 651 deaths, 267 were skilled nursing facility residents, 28 were in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless.

The state’s coronavirus dashboard reports there have been 149 deaths in Orange County in the last 14 days.

According to the California Department of Health, there have been at least 7,100 new cases of COVID-19 in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The state agency also reports 618 hospitalized patients in the last 14 days (suspected and positive) in 33 hospitals reporting across the county as of Saturday. This is a decrease of 15.2% since 14 days ago.

The county’s hospitalizations were listed as 554 on Saturday, with 171 people in ICUs.

The state’s coronavirus-tracking dashboard shows Orange County had at least 34% of its ICU beds available on Friday.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 32% (204)
  • 75-84: 23% (147)
  • 65-74: 18% (122)
  • 55-64: 13% (85)
  • 45-54: 9% (59)
  • 35-44: 3% (21)
  • 25-34: 1.5% (10)
  • 18-24: <1% (2)
  • 17 and younger: 0%
