Coronavirus: 8 new deaths, 767 new cases reported in Orange County on July 22

The Orange County Health Care Agency  reported another 767 new cases of the coronavirus as of Wednesday, July 22.

The cumulative total number of positive cases for Orange County is 31,743 since local testing began in March. It is estimated that nearly half of the cases, or 16,173 as of Wednesday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

There were eight new deaths reported in Orange County on Wednesday, bringing the total number of residents who have died to 521.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigation and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent death noted was from July 17.

Of the 521 deaths, 235 were skilled nursing facility residents, 17 were in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless. Earlier reports listed two as homeless.

The state’s coronavirus dashboard reports there have been 144 deaths in Orange County in the last 14 days.

Countywide, 374,114 tests for the coronavirus have been reported since testing began, with data through July 20. There were 7,530 daily tests reported in the update on Wednesday.

The state gave an 10.1% test positivity rate for the county, with 94,945 tests given in the last two weeks.

According to the California Department of Health, there have been 9,615 new cases of COVID-19 in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The state agency also reports 773 hospitalized patients in the last 14 days (suspected and positive) in 33 hospitals across the county as of Tuesday – up from 747 patients on Monday.

The state’s coronavirus-tracking dashboard shows Orange County has at least 39% of its ICU beds available on Wednesday.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 31% (164)
  • 75-84: 25% (131)
  • 65-74: 18% (93)
  • 55-64: 12% (64)
  • 45-54: 9% (46)
  • 35-44: 3% (15)
  • 25-34: 1% (7)
  • 18-24: <1% (1)
  • 17 and younger: 0%

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
