Coronavirus: 493 new cases, 14 new deaths in Orange County on Aug. 22

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 493 new cases of the coronavirus as of Saturday, Aug. 22, bringing the cumulative total of positive tests to 45,801 cases.

An estimated 13,153 new cases have been reported in the last 30 days.

There were also 14 new deaths reported in Orange County on Saturday, raising the death toll to 896 people. There have been 81 new deaths reported in the last five days.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent deaths were on Aug. 19.

Of the 896 deaths, 344 were skilled nursing facility residents, 54 were in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless.

It is estimated that more than three quarters of the cumulative reported cases, or 37,241 as of Saturday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county reports a total of 588,919 tests have been given since testing began, and at least 7,559 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.

According to the California Department of Health, there were at least 6,166 new cases of COVID-19 in Orange County in the 14-day period from Aug. 8 to Aug. 21.

The state agency also reports 448 hospitalized patients in the 14-day period from Aug. 7 to Aug. 21 (suspected and positive) in 33 hospitals across the county. This is a decrease of 17.3% from the previous 14-day total. The county has 31% of it’s ICU beds available.

The county report showed there are 110 patients in ICUs as of Saturday, the lowest level since late May.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

    • 85+: 31% (276)
    • 75-84: 22% (197)
  • 65-74: 20% (181)
  • 55-64: 13% (125)
  • 45-54: 9% (74)
  • 35-44: 3% (26)
  • 25-34: 1.3% (13)
  • 18-24: <1% (3)
  • 0-17: <1% (1)

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
