Coronavirus: 33 new deaths, 109 new cases in Orange County on Sept. 29

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 33 new deaths of the coronavirus on Tuesday, Sept. 29, increasing the cumulative total to 1,249 cases.

The county report also noted 109 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, Sept. 29, increasing the cumulative total to 53,557 cases.

The county has had an estimated 5,019 cases in the last 30 days.

The county will remain in the state’s red tier because the rate of new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people was 4.4. The county will be reevaluated next Tuesday, but will need to have a level between 1 and 3.9 new cases per 100,000 and a testing positivity rate below 4.9% for two weeks in order to progress to the next tier.

 

Of the 1,249 deaths in Orange County, 451 were skilled nursing facility residents, 88 were in assisted living facilities and four was listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

• 85 and older: 31% (388)
• 75-84: 22% (264)
• 65-74: 20% (255)
• 55-64: 13% (176)
• 45-54: 9% (107)
• 35-44: 3% (36)
• 25-34: 1.3% (18)
• 18-24: <1% (4)
•  17 and younger: 0% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent deaths were on Sept. 24.

It is estimated about 90% of the cumulative reported cases, or 48,146 people as of Tuesday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county reports a total of 857,884 tests have been given since testing began, and at least 7,899 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.

The county also reported 162 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Tuesday and 46 patients in ICUs.
