Coronavirus: 29 new deaths, 369 new cases in Orange County on August 27

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 369 new cases of the coronavirus as of Thursday, Aug. 27, bringing the cumulative total of positive tests to 47,459 cases.

An estimated 12,626 new cases have been reported in the last 30 days.

There were 29 new deaths reported in Orange County on Thursday, raising the death toll to 947 people.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent deaths were on Aug. 25.

Of the 947 deaths countywide, 362 were skilled nursing facility residents, 59 were in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless.

It is estimated that more than three-quarters of the cumulative reported cases, or 39,678 as of Thursday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county reports a total of 616,911 tests have been given since testing began, and at least 5,767 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.

The county reported 372 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus, which is nearly 50% less than the peak of 722 confirmed hospitalizations on July 14.

According to the California Department of Public Health, there were at least 4,581 new cases of COVID-19 in Orange County in the 14-day period from Aug. 13 to Aug. 26.

The state agency also reports 423 hospitalized patients in the 14-day period from Aug. 13 to Aug. 26 (suspected and positive) with 32 of 33 hospitals reporting across the county. This is a decrease of 11.9% from the previous 14-day total. The county has 31% of its ICU beds available.

The county report showed there are 112 patients in ICUs as of Wednesday, one fewer than the previous day and the lowest level since early May.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85+: 31% (292)
  • 75-84: 22% (204)
  • 65-74: 20% (191)
  • 55-64: 13% (134)
  • 45-54: 9% (81)
  • 35-44: 3% (28)
  • 25-34: 1.3% (13)
  • 18-24: <1% (3)
  • 0-17: 0% (1)
