Coronavirus: 2 more deaths, more than 154,000 tested in Orange County as of June 6

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported another two deaths attributed to the coronavirus as of Saturday, June 6.

The county has had 56 deaths in the past 14 days, according to a state health department database.

Of the 176 reported deaths since the start of tracking the virus in the county, 85 were among skilled nursing facility residents.

Some 77% of those who have died were older than 65.

The county also noted another 274 new positive tests have been reported in the last day, raising the total in the county to 7,321 since the start of testing in March. Friday’s report had 296 new cases, the highest daily total reported to date.

The average number of new cases for the past seven days is 183 a day.

Of the 7,321 confirmed cases, 802 were residents in skilled nursing facilities and 381 were Orange County Jail inmates.

The county has also started releasing an estimate for the number of recoveries from the virus, which was about 3,156 as of Saturday’s update.

Officials noted a change earlier this week in how hospitalizations in Orange County are reported. The data for patients in the hospital and ICU is now coming from the California Department of Public Health’s daily inventory of hospital status. The Orange County data represents the 26 hospitals with emergency receiving centers and licensed ICU beds.

The California Department of Health reports that there were 395 hospitalized patients (suspected and positive) in 33 hospitals across the county. There are 41% of the county’s stock of ICU beds available.

The OCHCA data for Saturday’s report was for June 4, and had 282 hospitalizations and 122 people in ICUs.

Saturday’s report noted another 2.074 tests had been given for the virus. The total tests conducted rose to 154,511.

The seven-day average trend for daily tests is 3,150.

The case rate for Orange County is about 22.7 cases per 10,000 residents.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85+: 32% (56)
  • 75-84: 27% (47)
  • 65-74: 18% (32)
