Coronavirus: 144 new cases, 3 new deaths in Orange County on Oct. 7

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 144 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, Oct. 7, increasing the cumulative total to 55,042 cases.

The county has had an estimated 5,047 cases in the last 30 days.

The county also reported three new deaths from the coronavirus as of Wednesday, increasing the cumulative total to 1,292 deaths.

Of the 1,292 deaths in Orange County, 465 were skilled nursing facility residents, 89 were in assisted living facilities and four was listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

85 and older: 31% (403)
75-84: 22% (274)
65-74: 20% (260)
55-64: 13% (186)
45-54: 9% (109)
35-44: 3% (36)
25-34: 1.3% (19)
18-24: <1% (4)
17 and younger: 0% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent deaths were on Oct. 4.

It is estimated about 90% of the cumulative reported cases, or 49,303 people as of Wednesday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county also reported 183 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Wednesday. Hospitalizations have slowly gone up since reaching a recent low of 155 patients on Oct. 3. The peak for hospitalizations in Orange County was 722 on July 14. There were 64 patients in ICUs.

The county update also reported 911,362 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, and at least 6,066 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.
