Cal State University extends application deadline for select campuses, programs

There’s some good news for students who missed the Cal State University admissions deadline: some campuses are still taking applications.
The deadline to apply for fall was Nov. 30.  But some campuses are offering extensions “if the campus or programs have availability,” said spokeswoman Toni Molle.
For incoming freshmen, 13 of the 23 campuses are still accepting applications for some programs, but availability depends on the campus. In some schools, such as CSU Channel Islands and Dominguez Hills, there are a wide number of programs available, while in others, such as CSU San Diego, there are very few still open and those are only in the extension program.
The new deadline date varies, depending on the university and the program. For many, it’s Dec. 15. Others are later, including CSU Bakersfield, where the deadline is March 1 for almost all programs.
The deadline extension does not include Southern California campuses in Long Beach, Fullerton, Pomona, Northridge, Los Angeles, San Bernardino or San Luis Obispo, which have exceeded capacity.
The CSU system has offered extensions such as these before, said Angela Williams, CSU enrollment management services manager.
Deadlines for transfer, graduate students and international students also vary. Information can be found online at Cal State Apply.
Applicants who were affected by the October wildfires in Northern California have been given until Dec. 15 to complete their filing, but only if they had already started the process and requested an extension, Williams said.  Taking advantage of that offer were 157 students, who also get to waive the $55 application fee for up to four campuses, Williams said.  Cal State Sonoma, which closed during the October fires, extended its deadline a few days more, to Dec. 18.
A “small number of students” were also given a filing extension because of a glitch that affected a few campuses for 30 minutes the evening of the deadline, Molle said.
This year, the CSU system received a record number of freshman applications: more than 627,700, (which includes students who applied to more than one campus.) By comparison, the number of applications for fall of 2017 was 575,522, Molle said.
