Brush fire prompts closure of Ortega Highway at both ends

Ortega Highway was closed at both ends — in Lake Elsinore and San Juan Capistrano — on Wednesday, May 5, because of a fast-moving brush fire in the mountains, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fire was reported a mile west of the Ortega Oaks Candy Store at 2:36 p.m.

Ortega Highway, also known as Highway 74, was closed on the west end at Gateway Place

Crews from the Cleveland National Forest and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department were battling the flames. No updates from the scene were immediately available.
