Another body found off Laguna Beach after report of missing swimmer

A body was recovered in the ocean off Laguna Beach on Saturday morning, Aug. 29, after an extensive search for a missing swimmer a day earlier.

Reports of a missing man off Table Rock beach – the same area in South Laguna Beach where another person was found dead in the water a week earlier – came in at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, with a multi-agency search that lasted until dark and resumed at sunrise on Saturday.

It is unknown if the body found in Laguna Beach on Saturday is the same as the missing swimmer reported the previous day, pending positive identification, according to Carrie Braun, spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The rescue effort was conducted by OC Lifeguards, which manages the area in south Laguna Beach, Laguna Beach city lifeguards, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Laguna Beach police and fire department, U.S. Coast Guard and State Parks lifeguards, according to OC Lifeguard Chief Jason Young.

“Based on witness reports, we considered it a confirmed missing person,” he said.

The body recovered on Saturday was found south of Tablerock Beach off Totuava, Young said.

The beach in the area was still closed Saturday morning and will reopen when the operation is over, Young said.

There’s no new information about a death that happened at the same location a week earlier.

“We don’t have anybody that witnessed that person go under,” Young said.

It’s the third death along Orange County’s coastline in the past week, with another person, identified as 25-year-old Dylan Haihuu Duong, found by a Huntington Beach lifeguard in the surf early Tuesday morning off Huntington Beach.
