1 killed in Irvine crash; man arrested on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run and murder

A crash in Irvine left one woman dead, and a man suspected of driving drunk and then fleeing the scene of the collision was arrested Saturday, Aug. 22.

Police were dispatched at 8:46 p.m. Saturday to a crash at the intersection of Main Street and Culver Drive, Irvine Police Sgt. Karie Davies said. Witnesses reported that a black Hyundai Elantra collided with a white Ford F-150 driven by a man who then immediately drove away.

Paramedics rushed a 20-year-old Irvine woman from the passenger seat of the Hyundai to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, Davies said. She died as a result of her injuries.

The pickup was stopped by officers a short distance away from the crash, police said. Its driver, Antonio Calixto Navarrete, 40, of San Clemente, was arrested on suspicion of hit and run, DUI and murder.

The Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call it at 714-724-7000.
