A woman was killed in a downtown Santa Ana apartment on 4th Street on Saturday morning following a report of domestic violence, sending authorities searching for her attacker, police said.
At 11:33 a.m. Saturday police received a call about a woman screaming in the 300 block of the street in an apartment above businesses across from the federal courthouse.
When officers arrived they found a woman unresponsive on the ground, bleeding and with trauma to her body, police said. Paramedics declared her dead shortly afterward. Authorities said they haven’t been able to identify the woman, who appeared to be in her 30s. It was not immediately known how she was killed.
Santa Ana Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said police are looking for an adult man who lived with the deceased woman. Police have not released the suspect’s identity.
“There were two people who lived there together, and we believe the suspect is the male half of that couple,” Bertagna said. “I don’t know if they’re married or boyfriend and girlfriend or what.”
Neighbors told police they heard a violent altercation and said the woman’s male roommate fled the building before officers arrived. Police were reviewing video footage of the area to track down the suspect.
4th Street, also known as Calle Cuatro, is a popular shopping and dining destination in Santa Ana, hosting stores that sell large quinceanera dresses and hip dining destinations.
Shoppers and business owners along the busy street appeared stunned, saying such violence is uncommon for the area especially during the day time.
Teresa Saldivar said Saturday’s killing was the first she remembered in the 32 years that her jewelry shop has been open on 4th Street.
“Never have we ever had a problem like this,” Saldivar said.
Mary Carnova came from Anaheim to do some Christmas shopping when she stumbled across the crime scene.
“We were surprised because we’ve never seen anything like this, especially here,” Carnova said. “It’s usually so peaceful. Especially here.”
The killing is the second in Santa Ana in less than 24 hours.
On Friday night, a man who had been shot was found unconscious behind the wheel of a crashed pick-up truck. He later died.
At 10:42 p.m. Friday Santa Ana police received calls of a shooting followed by calls of a crash in the area of Bristol Street and McFadden Avenue, said Santa Ana police.
Officers arrived at the 1300 block of South Bristol Street and discovered a man unconscious behind the steering wheel of a truck that crashed on the greenbelt divider of Bristol Street. It appeared that the man had been shot while driving the pick-up truck, said Santa Ana Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. Police suspect the killing might be gang related.
Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene at 11:06 p.m Friday.
