Woman gives birth to baby girl on 5 Freeway in Anaheim

A woman gave birth to a baby girl along the 5 Freeway in Anaheim Wednesday night, Nov. 9, after telling her husband to pull over as they were en route to UCI Medical Center.

The husband called 911 along the side of a carpool lane near the 91 Freeway about 9:30 p.m., Orange County Fire Authority Captain Jorge Robledo said.

He and his wife had thought they were heading to the hospital early in anticipation of the birth, Jeffrey Kiyomura told news videographer OnSceneTV.

After his wife told him their baby was on the way, he said, “I said no, I could probably make it if I drive fast enough. She was like, ‘No, the baby’s coming out now.’ ”

He pulled over, got out of the car and went to the passenger side.

“All of a sudden, the head was out, and the baby was already here,” he said.

Fire officials helped his wife out of the couple’s SUV as she held the baby girl in her arms, the OnScene video shows. The baby was wrapped in a green blanket with soccer balls.

The mother and baby were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

“As of now, the baby is happy, healthy,” Robledo said. “A normal delivery is what it seems.”

The captain said he’s assisted in several deliveries during his career, but assisting a couple on the freeway is rare.

Kiyomura and his wife had yet to pick a name, he said.
