California is among eight states where the anniversary of the 16th president’s birth on Feb. 12, 1809, is a holiday.

What is commonly known as Presidents Day is still legally Washington’s Birthday, only honoring the first president. It will be celebrated Monday. It is a federal holiday, meaning there will be no mail delivery.

The term Presidents Day began being popularized in the 1980s, when retailers combined sales formerly held in conjunction with Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays.
