Vigils, tributes planned locally for American service members killed in Kabul airport bombing

Vigils and memorials are starting to be planned for the three Southern California Marines who died in the bombing attack Thursday at the Kabul airport.

There were 13 American service members killed, hailing from the Inland Empire were Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio; Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20, of Rancho Cucamonga; and Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, 20, of Norco.

The Norco High community is planning a hike to Pumpkin Rock on Sunday, Aug. 29, in honor of alum Nikoui.

Nikoui, who graduated in 2019, participated in Air Force JROTC while a student at the high school. Organizers said in a social media post to meet at Pikes Peak Park, 97 6th St., and that parking is available at the fairgrounds.

The city of Murrieta has a vigil in honor of all the service members who died planned for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The tribute will take place at Town Square Park in the amphitheater. The park is next to City Hall.
