The northbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach came to a standstill late Friday morning and into the afternoon as hundreds of cars, most filled with people, angry after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all beaches and state parks in Orange County to temporarily close due to the coronavirus pandemic. The gridlock began south of Beach Boulevard and continued north toward the Huntington Beach Pier. It took as much as a half hour just to move forward a couple hundred feet. Many waved American flags from their car windows or hung posters wanting the beaches to open. Some got out of their cars and trucks, standing on the roofs waving flags.

We asked our photographers to choose their favorite photos from the month of May 2020, and here are some of the amazing images they selected.
The start of May looked like it was going to be filled with more coronavirus stories. But with a few days left in the month, the news turned to protests that morphed into rioting and looting.
With the civil unrest, our photographers risked their lives to bring you the news around the county.
From graduation car parades to crowds demanding an end to police brutality — our photographers were there.
We also captured people enjoying the opportunity to go outside, reopen restaurants and the generosity of Orange County residents helping their neighbors get through hard times
