Teenage killer who vanished from Santa Ana halfway house is captured

An 18-year-old man who disappeared from a Santa Ana halfway house last week and previously was convicted of stabbing his mother to death was captured in Anaheim on Sunday, April 17.

Ike Souzer was spotted at a homeless encampment by members of an Orange County District Attorney’s task force who were searching for him, authorities said.

Souzer was reported missing by the Orange County Probation Department on Wednesday, April 13, said DA spokeswoman Kimberly Edds. Two days later, the DA’s office announced that he was “at large” and described him as “extremely dangerous and violent.”

He recently was released from the Theo Lacy Jail and was supposed to be under electronic monitoring when he went missing.

Souzer was 13 years old in May 2017 when he stabbed his mother in front of her house in Garden Grove. Attorneys who defended him said he had been the victim of years of abuse. He was ultimately convicted of voluntary manslaughter in juvenile court two years later.

He then escaped from Orange County Juvenile Hall on April 12,  2019, by getting on the roof of the facility and somehow climbing down. He was found the next day at a McDonald’s in Anaheim.

In 2021, Souzer was convicted of battery with injury in a case involving deputy juvenile correctional officers, according to court records. As a result, he was ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device until July 9, 2023.

Details on how Souzer escaped the supervision of probation officials and his whereabouts over the four days he was missing were not immediately available Sunday. Authorities declined to say if he acted alone or might have had help.

This is a developing story. More information will be added when it becomes available.
