Swimmer dies off Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach

An unidentified female swimmer’s body was recovered by OC Lifeguards from the ocean off Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach on Wednesday, Oct. 5, shortly after 6 p.m., officials said.

The female had been seen struggling near another swimmer near the south end of the beach close to the sea cave around 4:49 p.m., said Laguna Beach police Lt. Cornelius Ashton.

“Lifeguards were able to rescue one but couldn’t rescue the other,” he said. The surf was at about three to four-foot high waves on Wednesday.

After the female disappeared in the water, other agencies assisted, including more OC Lifeguards, some dive teams and Laguna Beach Lifeguards. Laguna Beach Fire and police were on scene, as were the Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange County Sheriff Department’s helicopter Duke and its harbor patrol.

The Orange County Coroner was called to the beach in Three Arch Bay, just around the bend from the cliff that separates it from Thousand Steps Beach.

The identity and age of the female swimmer have not been released, Ashton said, pending notification of her family.
