Craftsman who helped surfers enjoy the thrill of riding waves were honored in Huntington Beach on Saturday, Oct. 9, during an induction ceremony for the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame.
The latest honorees were an international group, with Australia’s Mark Richards making this year’s list. Don Uchimura of Hawaii and East Coast board maker Will Allison were also among the inductees. West Coast board builders Gene Cooper, San Clemente’s Walter Hoffman and Bill Stewart, and South Bay-turned Huntington Beach-shaper Ed Sakal rounded out the group.
The International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame was created in 2000 and 138 board makers have since been honored, including icons such as Dale Velzy, Hobie Alter, Hap Jacobs, Jack O’Neill, as well as Greg Noll and Rich Harbour, both who died in the last few months.
