Southern California could see showers, thunderstorms this weekend

Forecasters are predicting a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms this weekend, especially in the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties and the Antelope, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, where a flood watch is in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday.

A flood watch is in effect for the same timeframe in much of Riverside County, San Bernardino County and parts of San Diego County.

“The conditions for flooding are there and the system we’ve been monitoring has been slow-moving, lingering over the San Bernardino mountains for the past few hours,” said NWS meteorologist Samantha Connolly on Saturday afternoon..

Some heavy downpours are possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Despite the chance for precipitation, inland temperatures remain high in the low 90s and are approaching 100 degrees in the Antelope Valley. The warm weather will likely continue into next week, and the showers and thunderstorms are expected to taper off by Tuesday, according to Connolly.

From the beaches to downtown Los Angeles, highs will linger in the 70s to mid-80s with a slight chance of rain on Sunday.

A beach hazards statement was also issued through Wednesday afternoon at the Malibu coast and other Los Angeles County beaches, where dangerous rip currents and breaking waves are expected due to elevated surf of 3 to 6 feet.

More typical midsummer weather is expected for the balance of the week, with night through morning low clouds in coastal areas, and temperatures within a few degrees of normal, forecasters said.
