Orange police have increased patrols at Chapman University after someone reported they were attacked on campus early Friday in what authorities are investigating as an attempted sexual assault.

The attack, apparently carried out by a man in a skeleton mask, took place shortly before 1 a.m. in the lower courtyard of Henley Hall, according to a campus safety alert.

The victim told authorities they were making a phone call when a man who had been hiding in the bushes struck them in the face. The victim fell to the ground, and was again “physically assaulted,” according to the safety alert.

The victim “actively resisted,” according to the alert, and the assailant fled. If wasn’t clear if the victim had serious injuries.

Campus safety officials described the attacker as an approximately 6-foot tall man with a thin build who was wearing all black clothing and the mask.

Following the reported attack, police have teamed up with campus security to increase the number of patrols on and around the campus, Orange Police Sgt. Phil McMullin said.

Investigators are also actively looking for security footage in the area to see if they captured the assailant, the sergeant added.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Orange Police Department at 714-744-7444.
